Weather can’t dampen spirits at Wilro Park Retirement Village

This fun walk aimed at promoting engagement, socialisation, and exercise among the elderly

Despite the gloomy weather on Friday, April 5, residents of Wilro Park Retirement Village donned their raincoats and umbrellas to take part in a fun-filled walk around the village.

This fun walk aimed at promoting engagement, socialisation, and exercise among the elderly while also bringing necessary services closer to them.

The enthusiastic participants were divided into three groups, each with its own pace: the Snail Walk (phase one), Tortoise Walk (phase two), and Rabbit Walk (phase three). This clever categorisation ensured that everyone could participate and enjoy the experience, regardless of their fitness level.

Phase one was buzzing with activity, as it was the central hub where various service providers had set up stalls to market their services. After completing the walk, the participants and spectators alike gathered to explore the vendors’ offerings.

“The fun walk was a fantastic way to bring our community together, and despite the rain, we’re thrilled with the turnout,” said Anita Kilian, the organiser of the event.

“We ensured that we brought services that would be of need to our residents. For example, physiotherapists, nurses, and eye and ear test services, emergency services, and we are grateful to the Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch for helping to facilitate the walk,” she said.

After completing their respective trials, participants made their way to the restaurant, where a lucky draw took place and nine different prizes were up for grabs.
