Cycling duo embarks on 875km journey for a worthy cause

Chaz Freislich and Eddie Steyn are cycling from Johannesburg to Port Edward to support St Laurence's Children's Haven and the Animal Anti-Cruelty League.

Chaz Freislich and Eddie Steyn, accompanied by their support driver Leon Steyn, are currently embarking on an epic 11-day cycling journey spanning 875km from Johannesburg to Port Edward in KZN.

Their ride, themed “Paws, Kids & Pedals,” aims to support the St Laurence Children’s Haven and the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL).

The duo’s adventure began on Saturday, May 3, with a send-off ceremony at Uncle Jim’s Pub and Grill. The event drew a crowd of supporters, including the Crooked Kings Motorcycle Club, classic car enthusiasts, runners, and sponsors.

Representatives from the St Laurence Children’s Haven and AACL were also in attendance, accompanied by children from the haven who rode their bicycles to show their support.

Chaz, general manager of Uncle Jim’s, says this is something he always wanted to do.

“It’s a good initiative, and it makes me feel great to cycle for a good cause.”

The pair plan to cover 60 to 90km per day, determined to reach their goal.

Eddie, a pensioner who has undergone significant health challenges, including three back operations and a hip replacement, is equally passionate about the cause. He was also part of the Drie Ou Ballies ride from Princess Crossing Shopping Centre to the premises of the AACL in Cape Town last year.

“I’ve always supported the league, and Chaz has been a longstanding supporter of St Lawrence Children’s Haven,” he said.

“We decided to include them both as beneficiaries of this year’s proceeds.”

The duo set off from Uncle Jim’s at 08:30, escorted by bikers and children from St Laurence’s.
