Local heroes run to raise awareness

The organisation aims to pass a message on to families of those affected by muscular dystrophy that they do not have to go through this alone.

A group of athletes known as Muscle Runners are turning every race into a message of hope for people living with a group of rare, progressive disorders that cause severe physical disability known as muscular dystrophy.

The team was formed by the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation Gauteng Branch (MDF Gauteng), a registered non-profit organisation that supports people affected by the condition through services, outreaches, and education.

“The Muscle Runners was formed as a passionate, community-driven initiative to raise awareness and funds for those affected by muscular dystrophy through running,” said Robert Scott, general manager of MDF Gauteng.

“By taking part in races across the province and dedicating each stride to those who cannot run themselves, the team embodies solidarity, resilience, and hope.”

Beyond running, the foundation leads several other community-focused initiatives like The Muscle Riders Cycle Team, who ride in the 947 Ride Joburg to raise funds. Little Heroes of Hope is a children’s cycling team that is also led by the foundation.

The organisation also raises funds through Casual Day, where stickers are sold to promote disability awareness and support services.

“All proceeds from these initiatives go directly towards sustaining the services that we deliver to our members.

“Our primary goal is to improve the lives of individuals living with muscular dystrophy, and we aim to raise awareness about these rare conditions, reduce stigma, and foster inclusion and accessibility. Ultimately, we strive to ensure that no family faces this journey alone,” Robert adds.

To strengthen its community outreach, the foundation has plans to get more people involved.

“We plan to expand impact by creating awareness through social media and local races and partnering with schools, clubs, and companies to host awareness days, fitness challenges, and fundraising events.

“By fostering a sense of purpose and connection, we hope to build a strong network of Muscle Runners united by compassion, determination, and hope,” Robert says.

Supporters are also encouraged to wear branded running gear to help spread the message.
