Learner earns Young Yale African Scholar recognition

Tsebo Mofokeng's hard work and dedication have placed her on an international stage after being selected for a highly competitive programme.

Academics, excellence and leadership are where Tsebo Mofokeng from Fleurhof naturally thrives.

The Grade 10 learner at the University of Cape Town online high school is officially taking her seat among the world’s most promising future leaders after being selected for the highly competitive Yale Young African Scholars Programme.

The programme will run from July 16 to 21 and is an intensive academic and enrichment programme designed for African secondary school learners who plan to pursue tertiary education and wish to make a meaningful impact as young leaders on the continent.

Participants will enhance their academic skills, receive guidance on university admissions and career path options, and join a network of young leaders from across Africa. They will also get a certificate of attendance, which will be useful in university applications.

For Tsebo, this opportunity is a stepping stone towards something big, and she says she cannot wait to learn more. She says she is excited about the opportunity to learn from world-class academics and connect with like-minded peers.

“I’m part of 240 participants selected from 42 countries that will be attending this programme online. I’m impatiently waiting for what’s to come from such an experience, whether it be broadening my knowledge or polishing new skill sets. I’m ready for the journey ahead,” she said.

She considers herself a natural leader who has always stood out among her peers. In primary school, she served as head girl and captained the hockey team. Her favourite subjects are Accounting and Mathematics, and she hopes to one day lead her own accounting firm.

She credits her mom, Ipeleng, for always looking for opportunities that help her reach her fullest potential and her school’s flexibility and future-focused education.

“My mom actually applied for me to be part of this programme,” said Tsebo.

Ipeleng said Tsebo stood out for her outstanding academic excellence, personality, critical-thinking abilities and her passion for addressing real-world challenges.

Her advice to other young people is to always have the drive, be consistent and never give up.
