Constant stream of arrests has Florida police making steady progress

Johannesburg Flying Squad assists in the arrest of a suspect illegally possessing a rifle and revolver.

The Florida Police precinct has recorded multiple successes in recent weeks.

From mid-March until April 17, at least 24 people have been arrested for possession of drugs in regular sweeps conducted at various crime hotspots. In the same time frame, 17 suspects have been arrested for multiple property-related crimes such as housebreaking and having housebreaking implements.

Notable successes across the month-long period include five men arrested for attempted carjacking, the pointing of a firearm, and being found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, on March 16. Several days later, 12 motorists were arrested at a late-night police checkpoint for drunken driving, on March 19.

On April 9 at a crime prevention operation at Florida Lake, a man was arrested for impersonating a police officer when he was found wearing a police reflector and carrying an imitation firearm. Two further suspects were arrested on April 12, one for attempted murder and another for having a stolen motor vehicle.

Florida police operations utilise the resources of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), private security, and a host of specialist police units. A disruptive operation held on Monday, April 17 produced another string of arrests. Two men were arrested for possession of drugs, and two others for possession of stolen items while Johannesburg Flying Squad carried out the day’s most significant arrest.

“Members received information of a house with unlicensed firearms and proceeded to the corner of Albertina Sisulu Road and Naomi Street. On arrival at the address, the house was searched and a 54-year-old suspect was subsequently placed under arrest,” said Johannesburg Flying Squad Media Officer, Raymond Sambo.
Police confiscated one rifle, one revolver, 26 rifle rounds, and seven revolver rounds. The suspect will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court in due course.
