South Road closed due to protest unrest

Residents of Grobler Park demand answers about their water and electricity woes.

Residents of Grobler Park, Lindhaven and surrounding areas have taken to South Road today, February 21 demanding transparency and answers about their constant water and power outages.

According to a resident Sbusiso Sibande, water has been an ongoing issue since the construction of a nearby residential complex.

“When they are on site, we run out of water. However, when they are not, we get full water pressure,” Sibande says.

Another resident David Tema says they have electricity outages almost every week.

“Electricity goes out every Thursday and only returns in the early hours of the following Monday. It’s been continuous since mid-2024.

“We demand transparency because they are always repairing in the same area and we don’t get any communication from the ward councillor or City Power.

“This is the third time we protested this year and nothing has been done”

“We lose some perishables when it comes to power and it is costing us. Some students and people work remotely and they are greatly impacted. And water is a necessity we need it every day,” Tema says.

The Roodepoort Record contacted Ward 71 Councillor Rene Benjamin who declined to comment stating it is a City Power matter.

The Record will reach out to City Power and publish their response once received.
