Provincial-led Operation Shanela successful in Roodepoort

47 illegal immigrants were arrested, 27 traffic fines were issued, and illegal mining equipment was confiscated in Matholesville.

About 47 illegal immigrants were arrested on Thursday, July 3, during a high-density operation led by the police’s Acting Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng, Major General Mbuso Khumalo.

The operation, which was conducted across various areas including Tshepisong, Matholesville, Princess and Roodepoort CBD, aimed to ensure compliance with regulations, laws and to assist stations with reducing crime.

The day started off with a roadblock on Impala Road where 27 traffic fines were issued for non-compliance with traffic laws, and one Toyota Quantum was impounded for having a tampered engine. The provincial detectives also arrested a total of 941 suspects, with 337 of those arrests being for crimes against women and children.

The second part of the operation targeted liquor outlets, where two shops were closed down, along with two suspects for non-compliance.

Additionally, in Matholesville, the police confiscated equipment linked to illegal mining activities, including pendukas, stamper pots, stampers, steel balls, spades and a small bag of gold dust.

According to a statement sent to the Roodepoort Record by Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, Khumalo, together with Acting District Commissioner of Johannesburg ??, Brigadier Bonginkosi Ndebele and Gauteng senior management, were also briefed about the crime situation in Roodepoort.

Stakeholders that joined the briefing included Divine Intervention’s Pastor Khumalo, the Department of Home Affairs, the Gauteng Traffic Department, and JMPD.
