Two police officers gunned down in Roodepoort

Zimbabwean suspect on the run after two police officers killed in daring escape.

Two police officers attached to the Johannesburg Trio Task Team were shot and killed this morning, August 8, while transporting a suspect from court.

According to provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the detectives – one based at Roodepoort Police Station and the other at Florida – had collected the suspect from a prison in Boksburg and taken him to the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, where he appeared on a charge of business robbery.

“The information is still sketchy,” said Masondo. “The shooting took place at about 10:30 on the main road in Roodepoort CBD shortly after leaving court.

“We do not yet know if anyone else was involved in the shooting, but we can confirm that both officers’ firearms are missing.

“One officer was declared dead at the scene, and the other died upon arrival at the hospital.

“The vehicle they were travelling in was found a few kilometres from the crime scene.”

Masondo identified the suspect as Jabulani Moyo, a Zimbabwean national, and said police would release a photo of him.
