Murder accused Tiffany Nicole Meek back in court today

Meek has been in custody since late July after her bail application was denied.

Tiffany Nicole Meek, the mother accused of murdering her son, Jayden-Lee Meek, is expected to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court today, September 17.

Meek was denied bail on July 29 and has remained in custody since.

She also faces charges of crimen injuria, attempting to defeat or obstruct the course of justice, and defeating or obstructing the administration of justice.

Jayden-Lee was reported missing on May 13 after failing to return home from school. His half-naked body was found the following day near the staircase of the Swazi Place complex, just metres from his home.

The court previously heard that Jayden-Lee had suffered a blunt-force head injury, and that his belongings — including his schoolbag, shoes and red school jacket — were found at Unit 13, where Meek resides.

During her bail application, Meek pleaded with the court, saying she was the sole breadwinner of her family and could afford R5 000 for bail.

However, Magistrate Anneline Afrika, in her ruling, delivered a scathing judgement, describing Meek as dishonest and misleading the court. Afrika said Meek’s return home on the same day her 11-year-old son’s body was found was “no coincidence”.

She further warned that Meek’s release would likely jeopardise the functioning of the criminal justice system and disturb public peace.
