High-speed chase leads to arrests

They kept residents on edge for months, and their arrest brings a wave of relief to many.

Three men wanted for multiple house burglaries in Roodepoort and surrounding areas were arrested on Saturday, December 6, after a high-speed chase in Boskruin, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed.

The suspects, aged between 37 and 38, were linked to house robbery cases reported at the Florida, Roodepoort, and Edenvale police stations. They were also wanted for escaping from lawful custody in Carletonville.

Fihla said JMPD’s K9 Unit officers received a lookout alert for a hijacked Toyota RAV4 suspected to have been used in the robberies. Vumacam cameras tracked the vehicle in Boskruin, prompting officers to intercept it. When they tried to stop the vehicle, the driver sped off, triggering a high-speed chase joined by the police’s high-speed unit. The suspects were eventually cornered at the intersection of President Fouché and Swart Street.

A search of the vehicle and suspects led to the recovery of housebreaking tools and masks. All three men were arrested for possession of a hijacked vehicle and housebreaking implements and detained at Honeydew Police Station. Further checks revealed they were also wanted in connection with nine additional house robbery cases.

The Honeydew CPF public relations officer, Michael Steyn, shared that this is great news because the suspects have been targeting homes in the area for the past few months. “A big thank you and well done to all the authorities who made it happen,” he said.

The suspects are expected to make their first court appearances soon.
