Emotions ran high at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court today, April 22, as Soweto residents, neighbouring communities, political parties and organisations gathered in solidarity with the family of a 12‑year‑old girl allegedly sexually assaulted earlier this month.

The accused, arrested on April 4 after the incident at his home, abandoned his bail application during his third court appearance. He remains in custody and is expected back in court on May 22 as the state continues its investigation.

The victim’s father, who asked not to be named to protect his daughter’s identity, said he is devastated but grateful for the support shown by the community and organisations working to ensure justice.

MEC for Social Development, Nomantu Nkomo‑Ralehoko, told those gathered:

“We are here to support the family of the victims. To the community, can we take a stand on such heinous acts? I also would like to encourage communities to come forward and report such crimes because there are many similar cases that we are attending.”

Botlhale Modisane of the Tshegofatso Pule Foundation welcomed the accused’s decision to abandon bail, noting the close proximity between the victim’s and accused’s homes.
