Two suspects linked to a business robbery and the attempted murder of police officers were arrested after the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) K9 Unit traced a vehicle believed to have been used in the crime.

According to a statement issued by JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, officers acted on information about a Toyota Quantum that had allegedly been involved in a business robbery at Columbine Square in Johannesburg South on July 14.

“The JMPD K9 Unit followed up on information regarding the vehicle and launched a targeted search in the Roodepoort area. Officers located the vehicle on Christiaan de Wet Road,” said Fihla.

He explained that officers stopped and searched the vehicle, where they discovered multiple bullet holes that linked it to an alleged shootout with police members during the robbery.

“The vehicle was occupied by two men who were immediately arrested,” Fihla added.
According to Fihla, the suspects were taken to Mondeor Police Station for processing. The driver faces charges of business robbery and three counts of attempted murder relating to the shooting at police officers.

The passenger was found to be in South Africa illegally and was charged under the Immigration Act. JMPD commended the officers involved in the operation, saying their swift response and tactical work led to the successful arrests.

JMPD expressed that they will continue to work with law enforcement partners through integrated operations to ensure the safety of communities and frontline officers.
