Goud Rand Phase 2 residents start the new year with no water

The residents say they've tried all channels to solve this issue, and they've received no response from Johannesburg Water.

Residents of Durban Deep, Goud Rand Phase 2, are starting the new year with an ongoing inconsistent water supply.

According to Nhlanhla Bembe, the water shortages have been an issue since they moved into the newly built complexes in 2024.

He explains that during this time, residents often go without water or receive it for just a few hours, typically between midnight and the early hours of the morning.

In some cases, they’ve been forced to resort to using fire hydrants as a source of water, as water trucks aren’t being deployed to the area.

“Staying in that complex is a massive challenge because hygiene is compromised. Multiple times, I’ve had to travel to Orlando to do my laundry there.

“It’s practically impossible there. When water only runs at night, you have to fill the bath just to use that same water to clean the toilet. It’s a huge struggle living there, and nobody seems to care,” he explained, adding that they’ve exhausted all their options to get assistance on this issue.

The Roodepoort Record has reported on this issue between 2024 and 2025, and after the Record’s visit in 2024, Bembe confirmed that they had proper running for three days, but the problem persisted, even after Johannesburg Water (JW) had said the water was restored.

Bembe said they suspect this issue is related to tender processes, not infrastructure, given the newness of the complexes.

Questions have been sent to JW, and no response was forthcoming by the time of publication.
