Resident battles month-long water leak

The weeks of uncontrolled water flow have left one resident worried about damage and water loss while she waits for the issue to be addressed.

A water leak that has been running for about a month near 117 Wilhelmina Avenue has left Nicole Potgieter frustrated as water continues to flow down the street with no repairs in sight.

According to Potgieter, the leak was first reported on February 16.

“I logged the issue and followed up several times, including raising it with the ward councillor via the WhatsApp community group, but no repair team has attended to the leak,” she said.

Water can be seen bubbling up from the ground and flowing down the street, raising concerns about water wastage and possible damage to the boundary wall of the nearby complex. Potgieter said they had to ask their gardener to redirect the water away from the wall into a nearby street drain to prevent damage.

She added that the problem has been recurring for years. According to Potgieter, previous repairs have often been temporary, with repair teams placing clamps on the damaged pipe instead of replacing it.

“At one stage, there were three clamps next to each other on the pipe trying to control the leak,” she said, adding that repeated patchwork may be placing pressure on the pipe and causing new bursts.

Potgieter also pointed out that a trench dug during a previous repair in the same area when she moved to the complex four years ago has still not been restored.

Ward 89 councillor Zander Shawe said the pipe had previously been repaired.

“It must have started leaking again because they fixed it in June 2025,” he said. He added that the matter had not yet been escalated to him as he had not been notified about the new leak.

The Roodepoort Northsider approached Johannesburg Water for comment on the reported leak, the delay in repairs, when residents can expect the pipe to be fixed and when the trench will be restored. No comment had been received at the time of publication. It will be published once received.

The resident is calling for the damaged section of pipe to be replaced to prevent further failures.
