Fake City Power email scam targets residents

Residents are urged to remain vigilant as cyber fraud cases continue to target unsuspecting residents through highly sophisticated methods.

City Power has issued a warning to residents and customers about a fraudulent email currently circulating that falsely claims to be from the utility provider and references a SARS letter of demand.

According to City Power, the email is not legitimate and did not originate from the organisation. The utility has urged members of the public not to click on any links or download attachments contained in the message, as these may expose personal or financial information to criminals.

“Customers are strongly advised to be cautious. This email is fake and does not come from City Power,” said the utility’s spokesperson, Isaac Mangena.

Mangena explained that while the message may appear authentic at first glance, it uses a misleading email domain such as “@city.power.co.za”, which is not associated with the organisation. The official City Power email domain is strictly “@citypower.co.za”.

He has also warned that cyber criminals often use slight variations of official domains to deceive recipients into trusting the communication. Residents are encouraged to carefully verify sender details before responding to any unexpected emails, especially those requesting payment or personal information.

City Power said it is treating the matter seriously and is actively monitoring the spread of the scam. Mangena has also appealed to the public to report any suspicious communication immediately.

Customers can report suspicious emails or activities to the City Power Security Risk Management Control Room on 011 490 7900, 011 490 7911, or 011 490 7553. Reports can also be made via WhatsApp on 083 579 4497.
