City Power still battling to restore electricity in Florida

City Power's Roodepoort SDC is struggling to keep up with six medium-voltage power outages across the region.

Residents across Florida are at their wits’ end with numerous power outages over the past week.

One outage has, as of May 5, been ongoing for seven days.

Community WhatsApp groups have, since yesterday, May 7, erupted with messages from angry residents, who are tired of waiting for the electricity to be restored.

According to City Power, the Roodepoort Service Delivery Centre is managing a total of six medium-voltage (MV) outages, with the latest reported on May 5 affecting customers in Bergbron, Florida Glen, Whiteridge and surrounding areas.

The entity says in a statement that technical teams will be dispatched during the course of the day to investigate.

At Florida North Substation, the power supply tripped again shortly after restoration on May 7, indicating a possible additional challenge on the network.

Technical teams resumed intensive investigations this morning, May 8, to locate the fault and assess the extent of the damage.

The outage is affecting Maraisburg, Florida North, Florida View, Florida Ext 2 and 3, Unified, parts of Florida Hills, Florida Park and surrounding areas.

At Florida Substation, affecting Cresswell Park, Georginia, Discovery, Florida and Hamberg, technical teams successfully located a fault between the station and Mechanical No 1 Ring Main Unit (RMU) late last night following extensive overnight work on site.

Material sourcing is currently underway, while repair work continues throughout today to enable the restoration process.

In the interim, RMU 1 and RMU 2 will remain off until repairs have been completed, and the network has been fully tested for safe restoration.
