Home Affairs extends weekend office hours ahead of voter registration drive

The Department of Home Affairs will open offices nationwide this weekend to help citizens apply for or collect Smart ID cards ahead of the Electoral Commission of South Africa's voter registration drive.

The Department of Home Affairs will extend operating hours at all offices across South Africa this weekend in support of the Electoral Commission of South Africa’s Voter Registration Weekend.

According to the South African Government News Agency, all Home Affairs offices will be open on Saturday, June 20, and Sunday, June 21, to assist citizens with identity document services, including Smart ID card applications and collections.

The department said the initiative is intended to make it easier for citizens to obtain the documentation required to register to vote and participate in democratic processes.

Minister of Home Affairs Dr Leon Schreiber said the extended hours would help more South Africans prepare to exercise their democratic rights.

“This weekend presents an important opportunity for South Africans to ensure that they are ready to exercise one of their most fundamental democratic rights. By extending operating hours nationwide during Voter Registration Weekend, Home Affairs is making it easier for citizens to obtain the Smart ID Cards they need to register and participate in our democracy.”

The department noted that more than 370 000 Smart ID cards are currently awaiting collection at offices nationwide.

Schreiber urged citizens not to delay collecting or applying for their identity documents, noting that Smart ID cards are essential for voting as well as accessing various services and economic opportunities.

“We encourage all South Africans who still need a Smart ID Card, or who have been notified that their Smart ID Card is ready for collection, to make use of this opportunity.”

Citizens are encouraged to visit their nearest Home Affairs office this weekend to avoid delays ahead of voter registration.
