Khulisa named finalist in the International Peace Awards
Khulisa has mediated over 17 000 cases from all levels of the criminal justice system over the last 25 years, with an estimated victim satisfaction rate of more than 82%.
Khulisa Social Solutions, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary of proactively supporting marginalised communities, has been named a finalist in the prestigious International Peace Awards 2022, which will be held on December 16, in Toronto, Canada.
Khulisa has been named a finalist in the International Peace Awards category for best work in addressing poverty and homelessness, children and youth interventions, and outstanding work in South African marginalised communities.
Its flagship projects include The Alexandra Peace-Making Project, which has 35 community Peace-Makers trained to deal with conflicts in the township as a direct response to civil unrests such as looting and violence in 2020. The Peace-Making Project’s long-term sustainable legacy has seen 21 different NGOs organise themselves into four groups: Health and Environment, Children, Parents and Children, and Arts and Innovation.
Khulisa has mediated over 17 000 cases from all levels of the criminal justice system over the last 25 years, with an estimated victim satisfaction rate of more than 82%. Khulisa’s origins in peacemaking can be traced back to its work in prisons in 1997.
“The recognition by the Canadian Government and Gandhian Initiative for Development of Support Services (GIDSS) is a great testament to our selfless work to introduce and implement programs in partnership with the homeless, youth, and children in South Africa,” says Lesley Ann van Selm, Managing Director of Khulisa.
“This year’s International Peace Awards honor thousands of organisations and individuals from 195 countries who have been assisting communities in a variety of ways,” said Raminder Singh, Executive Director of GIDSS, in a statement.
