WATCH: Florida house in flames after lightning strike
The Record has contacted Robert Mulaudzi, EMS spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg, for comment. As soon as new information becomes available, an update will be issued.
A residence caught fire presumably from a lightning strike last night, May 5, during a severe thunderstorm.
Good Samaritan Leon Serfontein, whose residence is just behind the property, rushed to the scene as soon as he heard the earth-shattering sound of the lightning strike and saw smoke billowing.
“I was one of the first people on scene. Thereafter came the paramedics and then the fire department. When I got to the scene, I jumped out of my truck, rushed inside the house and helped the lady of the house as she exited the burning building,” explained Serfontein.
He said he could see she was in shock and gave her a blanket to wrap around herself.
“Fortunately, it was just her in the house – she was in so much shock, she couldn’t speak. We tried to push her car out of the yard; we didn’t want her to lose her car as well,” added Leon.
City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Medical Services and Fire Department were on scene to help extinguish the fire.
The Record has requested comment from Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for City of Johannesburg’s EMS. An update will be issued as soon as more information becomes available.
