Gorden and Tania’s crochet dolls
Two residents have come up with a clever way in which to support themselves and their family.
During Covid-19 many people and businesses suffered financially. Gorden Ferreira and his wife, Tania, were no different.
As a handyman, Gorden has been struggling to find work so he started helping his wife who was making crochet bears. These bears are being sold at a profit, but Gorden says he prefers to manufacture dolls since the bears require a more delicate approach.
They needed to diversify since they had two teens in high school and a grandchild to support. Gorden estimates that they presently have 60 to 70 distinct bears.
“With the financial situation in the country, everyone is hard hit and it has affected us with fewer orders and work coming in,” explained Gorden.
He went on to say that some months they do well, but other times they ‘barely scrape through’.
“Our dolls are made with yarn and a crochet hook, using various stitches and patterns that my wife modified to make them into what we wanted,” he added.
Gorden said he hopes the financial situation in the country will improve so they will be able to get more orders and be able to make this venture profitable.
“We hope the result of our venture would be to give children handmade toys that are safe, soft and cuddly. Financially we hope that our venture would give us the means to provide for our children and granddaughter,” he concluded.
