Debate is an age-old form of problem-solving
IIE MSA’s School of Social Science holds regular debates and the most recent topic was whether there should be a maximum age limit for leadership, but not necessarily participation, within government. The purpose of the debate was to engage brilliant young minds and ignite thought-provoking discussions on the topic.
Students were encouraged to actively participate by posing challenging questions and offering counter-arguments, fostering a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment. The depth of knowledge and the level of critical thinking demonstrated by students were remarkable, illustrating the academic rigor and intellectual vibrancy on campus.
The students against the motion won the debate on the grounds of argument and the effective use of examples, facts and rebuttals. Debate participant and third-year Social Science student, Mbali Tracy Khoza said, “I learnt that a team where the team members didn’t know each other can work together effectively. The magic ingredient was the fact that we all shared one common goal and we were able to come together and create a great argument.”
