Florida NPOs uniting to spread the love of reading

Mofuthu wa Lerato specialise in educational support for foundation phase learners as well as a feeding scheme.

Dorcas Aid and Mofuthu wa Lerato non-profit organisation (NPO) are combining to boost the literacy levels in Florida.

Both situated in Madeleine Street, Lionel Cohen from Dorcas Aid handed over several boxes of books to Mofuthu wa Lerato’s matriarch Queen Seepe on August 23. The books range in style and difficulty but concentrate on making reading enjoyable through various educational activities.

The NPOs both have a strong focus on feeding the destitute in the area with Mofuthu specialising in the educational aspects of poverty alleviation.

“Today’s children are not reading. Reading is important to boost their mind as it is so fulfilling to understand what you are reading,” said Seepe.

“Even high school kids are not able to make coherent sentences and reading helps with pronunciation,” she added.

As well as their three-day-a-week soup kitchen, Dorcas Aid has a variety of projects that aim to alleviate poverty through sustainable means.

“Education is a vital part of ensuring a bright future. As an NPO, education is the greatest achievement that we could aim for,” said Cohen. For Dorkas Aid and Mofuthu, the overriding goal is to have children off the streets and establish positive habits.

Stressing how books can encourage interaction with peers that spur ideas or invigorate creativity, the humanitarian pair hoped the donation would grip the children’s imaginations. Seepe thanked Dorcas Aid for always being ready to help other NPOs in the area, praise Cohen saw as a duty.

Cementing his stance, he concluded, “Collaboration between NPOs is important as we all have the same goals, so let’s work together.”
