UNV visits local university

Representatives of the United Nations Volunteer Programme visited IIE MSA recently.

The United Nations Volunteer (UNV) Programme visited the IIE MSA as part of its drive to recruit members directly from tertiary campuses.

The UNV, in recognition of the potential and power of the youth to drive positive change, is recruiting members on behalf of UN agencies, governments, NPOs, and NGOs worldwide.

During its recent visit to the IIE MSA, representatives of the programme discussed volunteerism and it inspired students to become active participants in global development affairs.

“Students can volunteer for 3–6 month periods, normally during their breaks, after which they return home where they will continue with their studies,” says IIE MSA public relations and events co-ordinator Makupa Madia.

“As much as it is referred to as volunteering, it is a professional opportunity and an environment in which students are placed according to their qualifications and skillset.”

Once they are placed, they will be required to report for duty from Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm. UNV are paid a volunteer living allowance and receive other entitlements such as annual leave, medical aid and life insurance.

“We were very grateful for the information session by the UNV. The representatives knew exactly what they were talking about and they were inspiring. I believe that it is important for local and global organisations to tap into the youth’s creativity and passion and to harness our energy to address the world’s most burning issues,” Rhea Singh, a third-year law student, said.
