New garden manager for botanical garden

Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden introduces their new garden manager.

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (Sanbi), has announced the appointment of Nondumiso Magija as the new garden manager of the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden (WSNBG) following the untimely passing of Xolelwa (Xoli) Hlalu in June.

Nondumiso brings over 20 years of experience in horticulture and environmental management to this role, having worked with organisations such as the City of Cape Town, Johannesburg City Parks, and Mogale City Local Municipality.

She also served in a similar role at the Free State National Botanical Garden.

According to Sanbi’s director of marketing, communications and commercialisation, Nontsikelelo Mpulo, Nondumiso’s extensive experience and leadership skills position her well to continue the important work of the WSNBG, with a focus on biodiversity conservation, public education and community engagement.

“We are confident that Nondumiso will lead the garden with the same passion and dedication that has long defined this treasured space,” added Christopher Willis, SANBI’s chief director of National Botanical Gardens.

“We invite the community to extend the same warmth and support to Nondumiso, so together we can continue to protect and enhance the natural heritage of the West Rand.”

Reflecting on her new role, Nondumiso shared her passion for conservation and sustainability.

“I feel like I have come full circle with Sanbi, having started my career as an intern at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.

“The past three years have been a rewarding experience managing the Free State National Botanical Garden and I am excited to build on the great accomplishments of the WSNBG team.

“My goal is to make this garden a destination of choice for the surrounding communities and the people of Gauteng at large,” Nondumiso said.

She is passionate about the link between people and plants and is committed to promoting sustainability. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking and spending time in nature.

According to Sanbi’s director of gardens Thompson Mutshinyalo, Sanbi remains committed to ensuring the WSNBG continues its legacy as the best outdoor tourism destination in the West Rand, offering visitors a unique opportunity to connect with nature while learning about the importance of conservation.

“The community’s support has been central to our success, and under Nondumiso’s leadership, we look forward to strengthening these partnerships as we move forward,” he concludes.
