Thuso Phala Foundation inspires next generation

Former SA footballer launches his foundation bringing sports opportunities to children with special needs and neglected communities.

Lumo Lounge in Featherbrook Village Shopping Centre was a hive of activity on February 14 when sports fanatics celebrated the official launch of the Thuso Phala Foundation.

Thuso Phala is a former South African football player who still embraces his love for the sport by partnering with schools for children with special needs. He played for prominent clubs such as Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Supersport United.

The foundation’s CEO, Suzan Khoza Phala, explained briefly that the foundation will be 100% involved in adopting schools and introducing football programmes that cater to their abilities and give them opportunities to participate in school sports.

Khoza voiced her excitement and highlighted intentions to work with like-minded partners, including the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), and the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts and Culture and Recreation. She will oversee programmes for mothers and players, with a special emphasis on mothers of football players, drawing on her experience of playing the game.

“This foundation prioritises the well-being of children, especially those with disabilities, aiming to continue programmes and create more opportunities for them,” Khoza added.

Phala believes that the power of sport can change people’s lives, and this foundation will be giving back to the community.

“What inspired this foundation was looking back at my career and the impact it made. I truly believe that everyone deserves to be exposed to limitless opportunities, particularly in most neglected communities.

“The foundation will be rolling out in giving back to the community that raised me,” Phala said.
