Do not chain your dog – SPCA
Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA warns that chaining your animal is illegal.
The Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA has issued a warning to dog owners about the chaining of dogs, stating that it is illegal, and if inspectors find a dog chained unnecessarily, the owner will be prosecuted.
Mandy Cattanch manager of the SPCA, says this is according to the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962, which states, “Any person who confines, chains, tethers, or secures any animal unnecessarily or under such conditions or in such a manner or position as to cause that animal unnecessary suffering or in any place that affords inadequate space, ventilation, light, protection, or shelter from heat, cold, and weather can be sentenced to a fine of up to R40,000 and/or 12 months imprisonment with a criminal record.”
Mandy emphasised that chaining is a major contributor to behavioral problems in dogs, including increased aggression and a higher likelihood of serious biting or even killing.
“Yes, it is illegal. Dogs who live on chains are miserable, neglected, and constantly frustrated. Their muscles wither, their windpipe sustains damage from pulling against the chain, their health suffers, and they often become aggressive from frustration. It’s a life of loneliness and torture. Dogs are pack animals. They aren’t meant to live like that. It’s severe neglect,” she said.
Cattanach also appealed to the public to report any instances of dog chaining, emphasising that animals are living sentient creatures that feel pain, have emotions, and deserve to be treated with dignity.
If you are aware of a dog being chained or mistreated, please contact your local SPCA or animal welfare organisation to report the incident.
