Colourful delight as Shavathon sprays for cancer awareness

Cansa representatives encourage the public to stay engaged in the fight against cancer, reminding everyone that support and awareness are crucial steps toward a healthier future.

Clearwater Mall hosted the annual Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) Shavathon and saw a large number of people come to support the initiative on Saturday, March 1.

Organised by Cansa, the event brought people of all ages together to show their solidarity with cancer survivors and to honour those lost to the disease.

Throughout the day, participants lined up to shave, spray, or stencil their hair, each colourful transformation serving as a visible symbol of hope and unity. By shaving or spraying their hair, supporters helped spark conversations about cancer and this, according to those who support the association, is a simple but powerful way to stand with those who are battling this illness.

The Shavathon had a modest participation fee of R50 for adults and R25 for children. Every rand collected went directly toward Cansa’s programmes, including patient care, advocacy, and research. Many volunteers and families stepped up to help and several attendees shared deeply personal reasons for taking part.

Some shaved their heads in memory of loved ones who passed away from cancer, while others sported bright, sprayed-on designs to support friends currently undergoing treatment. Many first-time visitors to the Shavathon were impressed by the atmosphere of togetherness.

“The energy here is contagious,” said Zanele Ndebele who had her hair sprayed in neon pink. “I came with a few friends to do something positive for the community, and it’s been such an uplifting experience.”
