Another petrol thief caught in Witpoortjie
The suspect filled up with R 1700 worth of petrol and drove off
A swift response from security officials and law enforcement led to the apprehension of another petrol thief on Wednesday, March 19.
According to the manager of a local filling station, the suspect, driving a navy blue minibus, requested R1 700 worth of fuel and an oil refill. While the attendant was distracted, the suspect drove off using Corlett Avenue.
“The vehicle didn’t have a registration number we used our CCTV cameras to identify the vehicle and I quickly alerted the Witpoortjie Emergencies Crime Prevention Volunteer Unit WhatsApp group, and securities spotted the suspect parked at Payne Street [behind Pick n Pay],” she said
Upon arrival, the Roodepoort Record found a team of security personnel, including Help24, EC Security, National Crime Assist, Cobra Tac Ops, and Witpoortjie Emergencies, already on the scene. The suspect was later detained by the Roodepoort Police.
Interestingly, Payne Street is reportedly a notorious parking spot for scholar transports drivers with no registration numbers who started causing chaos while the suspect who is also an alleged scholar transport driver, was getting arrested.
This incident comes after a recent string of petrol thefts in the area, including one on March 10 at the Engen filling station on General Pienaar Avenue in Witpoortjie.
