HKNW: Crime prevention in action

Helderkloof Neighbourhood Watch detrails the secrets to their success.

It’s no secret that law enforcement agencies in South Africa simply do not have the resources at their disposal to deploy adequate manpower for effective patrolling of neighbourhoods.

In an attempt to fill the gap between law enforcement and private security, neighbourhood watches across the country spend countless hours patrolling within their local communities, acting as the eyes and ears of the police, and contributing significantly to the safeguarding of residents and property.

The Helderkloof Neighbourhood Watch (HKNW), responsible for Helderkruin, Wilro Park and Kloofendal, has over the years proven itself to be one of the more active and proactive neighbourhood watches in Roodepoort.

Affiliated to the Roodepoort Sector One Crime Forum and working closely with police and private security companies that operate in their area, their members can regularly be seen conducting patrols and assisting at accident and crime scenes.

According to HKNW patrol leader Craig Thompson, their efforts are making a difference.

“Our visibility patrols focus on identifying and reporting suspicious vehicles and activity within neighbourhoods,” he says. “We look for common markings used by criminals to identify potential target properties, we report gates that are left open, and we search all the hidey holes where vagrants, drug users, and criminals tend to hide.”

Thompson adds that the use of their amber flashing lights, and CPF apparel and signage also sends a clear message that the area is under guard.

“We regularly stand off at identified places within our boundaries, like garages, where our lights, signage, and uniforms ensure maximum visibility.

“Our patrollers are constantly in contact with each other via two-way radio, and can cover the entire area effectively.”

Thompson adds that the HKNW is about much more than deterring crime.

“While on patrol, we are always on the lookout for infrastructure-related problems like potholes, broken street lights, and water leaks. These are logged with the relevant entities directly after the patrol, and followed up with our ward councillor for further escalation when required.”
