Roodekrans black eagles: First photos of new chick emerge
It's finally here: The black eagle chick in all its glory!
The first photos have emerged of the newest addition to the Roodekrans black eagles family.
Photographer and avid eagle monitor Naomi Corinaldi climbed up to the top of the ridge at Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden on July 4 to try and sneak a photo past very protective mom, Makatsa, when it finally happened: Makatsa stood up in the nest, and there in her shadow sat the fluffy chick.
Unfortunately, hidden in the shadows, the photos were not as clear as hoped for.
Another four hours braving the icy wind on top of the ridge on July 8 paid off even more when Corinaldi managed to get many beautiful photos of the chick in the sunshine, with Makatsa standing guard.
According to Black Eagle Project Roodekrans committee member Dougie Crewe, the photos coincided perfectly with the chick’s 25-day birthday.
“We are excited to follow the new chick’s growth over the coming months.”
