Charity founder receives award for outstanding service

Adeline Singh was recognised for her outstanding contribution to women's empowerment at the Westgate Women Power Awards.

Co-founder of Weltevreden Park-based charity Supporting Those in Need Together (Stint), Adeline Singh, was honoured during a swanky ceremony held at the Westgate Shopping Centre on August 21 for her outstanding contributions to people in need.

The annual Women Power Awards is held by Westgate and the Region C Gender-based Violence Forum to recognise the role of local women making a tangible difference within their communities.

As a community activist, Adeline wears many hats.

In her own words, Stint is not your typical charity that gives away food.

“While we do support families and people in need with food parcels, among other things, our main focus is on empowerment through education, mentorship, and personal growth.

“I’d rather teach someone to do for themselves than make people dependent on my help.”

Adeline adds that her work would not be possible without the dedication and grit of her right-hand woman, and project co-ordinator, Rosemary Morris.

“My head is constantly bursting with ideas,” she says. “Rosemary is the one who keeps me grounded and helps me make my dreams and ideas a reality.”

Over the years, Stint has branched out from its initial focus, which was to help people who struggled to make ends meet during the Covid pandemic.

“We run weekly Gender Based Wellness programmes, where we support women in starting and running their own businesses.

“Instead of them waiting around for employment opportunities to earn an income, we help them to create their own opportunities.”

Stint is also well-known for having one of the widest beneficiary ranges among local charities.

“We don’t focus on only one segment of the community.

“We work with everyone: The youth, the elderly, women, families, unemployed men – everywhere we can make a difference.

“I am extremely honoured to have been chosen for this award. Charity work can be a thankless business, and it helps that the work I do is seen and recognised.”
