New trees planted at retirement home

The trees will create a sensory garden for Alzheimer's patients.

In celebration of Arbor Week, several trees were planted at the Roodepoort Sentrum vir Bejaardes, creating a much-needed sensory garden for the residents.

Arbor Week is observed every year from September 1 to 10 and is aimed at encouraging individuals to plant trees. On Wednesday, September 3, the residents gathered together to witness this new life being planted.

Annatjie Dorfling, the manager of the retirement home, emphasised the importance of a sensory garden for Alzheimer’s patients, saying it stimulates the senses to promote well-being, reduce anxiety, and enhance cognitive function.

The chairperson, Maggie Lindeque, added that the garden encourages residents to connect with nature, fostering a sense of healing and community. After the tree planting session, the residents enjoyed lunch together, mesmerising and strolling in their new garden.
