Kloofendal hosts orienteering competition
Orienteers had to navigate the reserve with only a topographical map and a compass.
The Rand Orienteering Club (ROC) held an orienteering competition at Kloofendal Nature Reserve on Sunday, September 14, with teams from far and wide participating.
Orienteering, a sport in which contestants receive a detailed map which they must use, with the help of a compass, to locate a set number of markers, while moving at speed, is becoming more popular by the year, as it offers fitness, a great outdoor experience, and teaches people to navigate in unfamiliar territory.

According to Friends of Kloofendal (FroK) co-founder Karin Spottiswoode, the event was a great success.
“The ROC holds a few events here every year and it is always great fun.
“We had various courses ranging from easy to expert.

“Participants got underway at the starting line and the idea is to see who can find all the markers and make it to the finish line in the fastest time.
“Each participant or team carries with them an electronic device which registers the various markers as they find them.
“There are always interesting finds along the route. One of the teams even found a big safe lying face down in the veld.”
