80’s fundraiser to support ECSA

Do you miss the 1980s? This is your time to relive them for a cause.

An 80s-themed music fundraiser will light up the Barnyard Theatre at Silverstar on Saturday, October 11, with proceeds going directly to Emergency Control South Africa (ECSA), a volunteer-driven fire and rescue organisation.

The event, titled ‘Fire & Flashbacks’, promises a night of neon nostalgia with live bands and costumes – all in support of local firefighters who risk their lives to protect the community. The doors open at 18:00, and the show will kick off at 19:00 and run late into the night.

According to the ECSA chaplain Pieter Boshoff, all funds raised will go directly to supporting the organisation’s operations.

“All our volunteers are 100% self-funded, so every cent raised will go directly to ECSA. The money helps keep our rescuers safe and effective while they work to keep our community safe,” he said.

Pieter also shared that the funds will be used for maintaining equipment, training volunteer firefighters, and covering essential operational costs such as uniforms, protective gear, fuel, and communication systems.

While this year’s event marks a much-anticipated return after 2024’s cancellation, the annual Barnyard fundraiser has become a tradition for the organisation. The chaplain explained that the 80s theme was chosen because it appeals across generations.

“Whether we like to admit it or not, young and old have some connection to an 80s song – even if it’s just ‘Rickrolling’ a friend with Rick Astley’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’,” Pieter explained.

Guests are encouraged to dress up in retro fashion to embrace the spirit of the decade. A donation box will also be available at the venue for those who want to contribute more on the night.

For those unable to attend, ECSA welcomes once-off or monthly donations via its website. ECSA is a registered Section 18 non-profit, meaning businesses that contribute can receive tax benefit certificates.

“Our work depends on community support. With this fundraiser, we get to give people a night of music and fun while also raising the funds we need to continue saving lives.”
