‘Chihuahua’ of the Roodepoort SPCA earns her inspector stripes
From overcoming fear to enforcing animal protection laws, Busi Maseti’s remarkable transformation shows how compassion, courage, and commitment can save lives and inspire communities.
Busi Maseti’s journey to becoming an inspector is as inspiring as her unwavering commitment to animal welfare.
Described as the “Chihuahua” of the Roodepoort/Krugersdorp SPCA inspectorate team, Busi recently obtained her inspector qualifications – a proud milestone in her mission to protect and care for animals.
Her colleagues affectionately call her the “Chihuahua” because, though small in stature, she is fierce in spirit and relentless in her determination.
“I nip and nip until I see real change,” she jokes. “If my warnings and education are ignored, I will bite with full force to enforce the law.”
Her passion for animal rights extends far beyond the call of duty.
Before joining the SPCA, Busi worked in media, primarily in marketing. She resigned shortly before Covid-19 in search of new opportunities. When lockdowns began, she decided to volunteer at the local SPCA – a decision that would change her life forever.
“Initially, I was very scared of animals. I started volunteering by cleaning kennels and feeding them. After spending time with them, I fell in love and realised they are innocent beings who need our love and care. That’s when my passion was ignited,” she said.
In 2021, Busi joined the team permanently as a receptionist – a role she also enjoyed.
“I’m a very bubbly person, so I loved interacting with people and tackling the challenges that came with the job,” she reflected.
Witnessing daily cases of animal abuse and neglect strengthened her resolve to make a greater impact. Encouraged by her manager, she decided to pursue her inspectorate qualifications – a demanding two-year journey of study and practical training.
“My manager saw potential in me and told me I was capable. I applied to become an inspector with the National SPCA, attended courses, and led a major project that was due in December. I’m grateful that my hard work and determination paid off,” she said.
Now, whether she’s rescuing neglected dogs, intervening in cruelty cases, or educating communities about responsible pet ownership, Busi does not back down until justice is served. Her efforts have already made a tangible difference in the lives of many animals and their owners.
“What I want people to know is that the SPCA is not here to fight with anyone. We are here to educate – more than anything,” she concluded.
