EMS urges residents to swim safely this summer

The department adds that rivers, dams and lakes are not safe for swimming.

As the warmer weather kicks in, the City of Johannesburg emergency management services(EMS) has issued an urgent warning urging residents to exercise caution around water.

With more people planning outdoor activities, EMS emphasises the importance of avoiding unsafe water areas to prevent accidents and drownings.

In a recent media statement, EMS media liaison officer Kagiso Phasha stressed that rivers, dams, and lakes are not safe for swimming, urging residents to stick to designated swimming pools and municipal facilities where trained lifeguards are present. The department also reminded parents and guardians to vigilantly supervise children near water, whether at home or in public spaces.

Key safety tips

• Swim only in designated, supervised swimming pools
• Avoid rivers, dams, and lakes, even if the water appears calm
• Never swim alone; always have someone nearby
• Learn basic water safety and rescue skills
• In case of emergencies, call 011 375 5911 or dial 112

“Prevention and caution are the best ways to keep our families safe around water,” said Phasha.
