Wilgies collect plastic to change lives
This project shows that lives can be changed while also caring for the planet.
Learners and staff from Curro Wilgeheuwel came together to make a difference in their community on Monday, October 20.
As part of the school’s outreach programme, they collected plastic bottle tops and bread tags to support the Sweethearts Foundation of South Africa, an organisation that recycles these items to help provide wheelchairs for people in need.
“Our school was inspired to collect plastic bottle tops and bread tags to support the creation of wheelchairs because of the need we see in our own community. We recognised the importance of providing mobility and independence to those who need it most,” said one of the teachers, Sanet Steyn, explaining the drive behind their participation in the project.
The collected recyclables were delivered to the Sweethearts Foundation, where they will be turned into wheelchairs for people who cannot afford them. The initiative also helped learners understand how simple actions like recycling can bring big change.
Sanet shared that the school is passionate about community outreach and environmental sustainability. Initiatives like this align perfectly with their values, teaching learners the importance of recycling and giving back.
“This project not only builds social responsibility but also shows our commitment to helping others,” she added.
The Sweethearts Foundation has been running this recycling-for-wheelchairs project for years, turning plastic waste into hope for those who need mobility aids.
“We’re proud to be part of this impactful project and grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact. We look forward to continuing this project in the future. Every bottle top and bread tag counts,” Sanet shared in conclusion.
