Granny knits for children in need
Pam Saunders (92) has, over the years, knitted more than a thousand jerseys and beanies.
Even at 92 years old, Pam Saunders is still making a tangible difference in the community.
As a resident of Floroma Home for the Aged, Pam’s lifelong passion for knitting and crocheting has touched countless lives over the years, with thousands of handmade items created out of love and compassion.
Sharing with the Roodepoort Record, she said her dedication extends beyond hobbies; she has been knitting gifts for babies born into her family and friends.
However, over the past few years, she has stretched work to the greater community, supporting vulnerable newborns and their moms at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.

“I provide beanies and jerseys to babies who come from disadvantaged families,” she said. These beanies and jerseys are then distributed by the Baragwanath Care and Comfort Team, which was established in 1954, to the moms or families in need.
Despite her hands often aching and her eyes growing tired, Pam continues to spend much of her time and resources knitting for these little ones. Each jersey or beanie crafted is a symbol of love and warmth.
“We will never actually know the full impact of the love shown to a mom worried about clothing her baby,” she added.
Pam is an inspiring example of how one person’s small acts of kindness can create a ripple of positive change.
