Join the rejuvenation of Sparrow Village

Sparrow Village invites residents to join their clean-up campaign.

Sparrow Village is under new management and will henceforth be known as Sparrow Home of Love, a cancer hospice and children’s home.

According to board chairperson Thoko Mtubu, they are working to turn over a new leaf and restore the good name of this once world-renowned institution.

“We have formed a new non-profit entity that we feel more effectively deals with a relevant current issue, since the HIV and Aids pandemic does not present the crisis it once did,” she says.

“Our immediate goal is to transform the appearance of Sparrow Village.

“Over the years, the buildings have deteriorated and rubbish has collected on the premises, worsened by some of the illegal occupants of Sparrow Village, who have taken to recycling as a means of earning an income.”

Mtubu adds that the committee is also in talks with all the relevant government departments and law enforcement agencies to address the issue of illegal occupants at the centre.

“We are aware of various illegal activities being undertaken by some individuals who live in the village, and we are working with the authorities to try and put a stop to this.

“These processes are ongoing, and we hope to see the problems resolved soon.”

In the meantime, the work to restore the village to its former glory has already begun.

“We started cleaning up the rubbish dump, and we are planning to start revamping the buildings.”

The board of Sparrow Home of Love has also launched a big clean-up campaign planned for Monday, November 4.

“We have several individuals and organisations on board to come and lend a hand,” says Mtubu.

“Political party, BOSA, is sending a delegation to come and help, as is Dorca’s Aid.

“We also have many former Sparrow Ministries staff members coming to lend a hand, and Pikitup is providing us with refuse bags.”

Mtubu invites members of the local community to pitch in.

“We want to assure the local community that we are serious about turning the tide at Sparrow Village, and would love it if they would join us.

“All they need is a hat and strong shoes, gardening gloves, and whatever tools they want to bring along.”
