G20 road closures to impact Hendrik Potgieter Road

Heading out this weekend ? Find out when closures will start to avoid traffic and delays.

Residents are advised to prepare for significant traffic delays this weekend as Gauteng launches a large-scale joint traffic operation ahead of the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RMTC), Gauteng Traffic Police, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, Tshwane Metro Police Department, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department, and police will co-ordinate temporary road closures, lane restrictions, and rolling blockades on November 22 and 23.

The operation will affect Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni, with several national, regional and arterial routes subjected to intermittent closures for the movement of international convoys.

Roodepoort residents will be highly affected along Hendrik Potgieter Road. Rolling closures will be enforced between 07:30 and 10:00 on both days. Officials have warned that when convoys are moving, roads will be closed completely to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. Each closure may last between 30 minutes and one hour, depending on security requirements and traffic flow. Roads will reopen as soon as convoys pass through.

Additional traffic pressure is expected due to extensive closures near Nasrec and Crown Mines, which are frequently used by Roodepoort motorists travelling toward the south of Johannesburg. These include full closures on the Golden Highway between Rand Show Road and Soweto Highway from today, November 19, closures on Nasrec Road between Rand Show and Shaft 17 on November 22–23, and closures on the northern portion of Rand Show Road between the N1 and Nasrec Road on the same dates. Booysens Reserve Road will also be closed between Crownwood Road and nearby intersections, with limited access.

Residents are encouraged to use alternative routes. In the Roodepoort area, authorities recommend Beyers Naudé Drive, Christian De Wet Road, and Ontdekkers Road instead of Hendrick Potgieter. For travel through the south, suggested routes include Main Reef Road, Soweto Highway, Crownwood Road, N17, Aerodrome Road and Adcock Ingram Road.

The RTMC has assured that signage, traffic officers and real-time updates will guide motorists throughout the operation, and emergency services will retain priority access.
