CPF elections postponed – again

Elections for a new executive committee for the Florida CPF have been postponed to next year.

Elections for the Florida CPF, scheduled to take place tonight, December 3, were cancelled at the eleventh hour.

According to Thabo Thipe, a representative from the Department of Community Safety who presides over community police forums, the decision was taken because Sector 2 of the Florida CPF has not yet successfully concluded its elections.

The Roodepoort Record reported last week that the Sector 2 Crime Forum election was again postponed when residents of the Jerusalema informal settlement refused to accept the defeat of their preferred candidate for deputy chairperson. The residents disrupted proceedings, forcing officials to halt the election.

“Sectors 1 and 3 of the Florida policing precinct have successfully concluded their elections, but unfortunately Sector 2 was unable to do so.

“We have received input from the district as well as from the Gauteng Provincial CPF Board that we can only proceed once Sector 2 has an elected board in place.”

When asked why the decision was communicated only on the day the elections were meant to be held, Thipe said they were waiting for feedback from the district.

“The election will be prioritised early in the new year.

“In the meanwhile, we will engage with the candidates nominated for the various neighbourhoods to find a solution.”

Thipe would not comment on whether the election results for chairperson and deputy chairperson, both elected last week, would stand.

“That is something we will take up with the nominated candidates, the district, and the provincial CPF board.”
