Festive season safety tips

Do you want to know how to enjoy a festive season without worry? Read these tips to learn how you can protect yourself and your loved ones.

The festive season in South Africa is known for family gatherings, travel, shopping, and events, but it also sees an increase in crime and accidents.

The Honeydew CPF’s public relations officer, Michael Steyn, has shared some tips on how families can enjoy a safe and joyful holiday season.

General personal safety

• Stay alert in crowded places. Shopping centres, beaches, taxi ranks, and events attract pickpockets. Keep bags zipped, phones out of sight, and wallets in front pockets.
• Avoid flashing valuables. Expensive jewellery, smartphones, and branded items can attract unwanted attention. Keep it low-key when out in public.
• Use ATMs wisely. Choose ATMs inside banks or malls, shield your PIN, and walk away if anyone offers assistance.
• Walk in groups when possible. Safety in numbers is especially important at night or in unfamiliar areas.

Road and travel safety

• Plan your routes. Stick to well-lit, busy roads and let someone know your destination and expected arrival time.
• Keep doors locked and windows up. Be vigilant at traffic lights and intersections known for smash-and-grab incidents.
• Avoid stopping on highways unless necessary. If you must stop, pull off at a safe location such as a garage or service station.
• Don’t drink and drive. Accidents spike during holidays. Use taxis, e-hailing services, or a designated driver.

Home safety

• Double-check your security. Test alarms, lock windows and gates, and inform your security company if you’ll be away.
• Make your home look lived-in. Use timers for lights or ask someone to check in periodically.
• Be cautious on social media. Avoid sharing travel plans publicly, as this can attract unwanted attention.

Online and e-commerce safety

• Watch out for scams. Be wary of fake courier messages, urgent bank alerts, and deals that seem too good to be true.
• Shop only on trusted websites. Check for secure payment options and avoid random promo links.
• Protect your personal info. Scammers use details like addresses and travel plans for targeted crimes.

Out and about

• Watch your drink. Keep it in sight at bars, clubs, and events. Never accept open drinks from strangers.
• Set up check-in points. Agree on meeting spots and check in with friends regularly.
• Use trusted e-hailing services. Verify the driver, vehicle, and route before getting in.

“Festive season safety doesn’t have to be stressful, just stay alert, trust your instincts and take simple precautions. A little awareness goes a long way toward ensuring a joyful, memorable, and safe holiday season,” Michael said.
