Young woman gives birth at police station

The situation required calm and quick action, as it was clear that the birth could no longer wait.

A healthy baby girl was safely delivered at the Honeydew Police Station on February 15, after a volunteer emergency medical service responded to a call involving a woman in advanced labour.

According to Neil van der Merwe, director and medic at ComMed, he arrived to find the young woman very close to giving birth.

With no ambulance immediately available, he prepared to manage the delivery on the scene.

“About 45 minutes later, a baby girl was delivered in the station’s back office. Both the mother and her newborn are doing well,” he said.

Neil further explained that the mother and baby were later transferred to the hospital by a government ambulance for further care and observation.

“We don’t usually like to share details about the calls or the scenes we attend, but now and again, there are those that should be shared because of the joy they bring,” said Neil.

He also thanked the police officers who assisted during the delivery.

“A special thank you goes to the three female police officers who stayed throughout the process and provided support to me, the young mom and her baby. They went above and beyond,” he said.

ComMed operates as a non-profit organisation, delivering free emergency medical response services in the greater Roodepoort area, parts of Randburg and surrounding suburbs. The organisation relies on trained volunteers to support communities during emergencies.
