Thrift market draws crowds to country venue

There was a blooming atmosphere at Rusty Hook as residents immersed themselves in treats and products.

The popular Hooked on Thrift market returned to Rusty Hook on February 28, transforming the venue into a vibrant hub of vintage fashion, pre-loved treasures and community connection.

Shoppers streamed through rows of colourful market tents, browsing stalls packed with thrifted clothing, accessories, curios and upcycled goods. From retro jackets and statement jewellery to rare collectables, the market offered bargain hunters and style enthusiasts plenty to discover.

According to Rusty Hook event organiser, Meryl Rosenberg, the market plays an important role in promoting sustainable consumer habits. By encouraging shoppers to buy second-hand and support upcycling initiatives, the market helps reduce waste and extend the life cycle of clothing and household items. At the same time, it provides a valuable platform for small businesses and local creatives to showcase their products outside of traditional retail spaces.

“The atmosphere was lively yet relaxed, with visitors taking their time to explore, chat with stallholders and compare finds. Friendly exchanges between buyers and vendors added to the sense of community, while chilled drinks and sunny weather created the feel of a laid-back weekend gathering rather than a typical shopping trip,” said Meryl.

The crowd consisted largely of residents from Honeydew and surrounding areas in Roodepoort and greater Johannesburg, including collectors, fashion lovers and regular marketgoers. While no high-profile personalities were in attendance, the strong local turnout reflected growing interest in thrift culture and conscious shopping.

The market forms part of Rusty Hook’s ongoing monthly market series, with future editions already planned. As the thrift movement continues to gain momentum, organisers expect the market to remain a staple on the community calendar, offering both sustainable shopping and a welcoming social space for months to come.
