Honeydew man’s ‘stolen’ car found minutes later

What seemed like a theft that brought moments of fright turned out to be a simple mix-up.

A young man caused a brief scare in Honeydew early on Saturday, 28 February, after mistakenly believing his silver Nissan Navara had been stolen.

According to a report shared by the Honeydew Community Policing Forum (CPF), the incident occurred at about 00:15 when Honeydew police officers on patrol spotted the man walking in the middle of Christiaan de Wet Road near Scott Avenue. He told officers that his vehicle, cellphone and wallet had been stolen.

An alert was immediately circulated to the Honeydew emergency group and, by 00:37, the vehicle’s tracking unit had been activated. Security teams from Honeydew CPF, Guardmax, GP Tactical and SB Security began searching the area.

Within minutes, the vehicle was located in a nearby parking area. Officers proceeded to the scene and returned the vehicle to the young man’s mother.

According to the CPF, it appeared the man had forgotten where he had parked after a night out. His cellphone was found inside the vehicle by a CPF member.

“Well done to all members who responded swiftly and worked together to recover the vehicle within 10 minutes of deployment,” said Honeydew CPF public relations officer Michael Steyn, thanking those involved in the response.
