Writer and communicator use storytelling to inspire reflection

A communication specialist and poet uses storytelling to spark connection and reflection through digital media, writing, and authentic expression.

Communication specialist, writer, and poet Tumelo Tshabangu is steadily carving out a space for himself through storytelling, digital media, and creative expression rooted in authenticity and human connection.

Born and raised in Mamelodi, Tumelo recently moved to Weltevreden Park and holds a Diploma in Public Relations and Communication from the University of Johannesburg. His professional journey has largely been shaped by work in marketing, social media, and content creation, where he has focused on using communication not only to inform audiences but to create meaningful engagement.

Working in fast-paced media and promotional environments, Tumelo developed experience in digital storytelling and audience-driven communication. His contribution to promotional and media campaigns earned him a nomination at the Telkom Radio Awards in the Stunt/ Promotion category. A recognition that further cemented his passion for impactful communication.

Alongside his professional career, he has continued building a name for himself in creative writing and poetry. He was featured as one of the poets in Smash of Poetry, an anthology published by Writer’s Bloc, where he contributed a piece titled The Unlikely Brotherhood.

“My poems explore themes of grief, identity, memory, and personal reflection, demonstrating the ability to transform deeply personal experiences into work that resonates with wider audiences. My aims to create language for emotions and experiences that many people struggle to express for themselves,” he said.

“What began as a way to process my own experiences slowly turned into something bigger. I realised that this gift isn’t just for me,” he explained.

His creative process is rooted in intentionality and honesty. Tumelo believes his writing is carefully structured to make sense of experience and preserve meaning rather than simply express emotion.

The same intentional approach shapes his professional work in communication and media. Guided by values of truth, discipline, and responsibility, he believes strong communication requires consistency, clarity, and an awareness of the impact words can have on people and communities.

He is working on his first poetry anthology, a collection of poems written over several years that explores themes of self-discovery, growth, discipline, and identity. He hopes to release the project next year.

As he continues to grow both creatively and professionally, Tumelo remains committed to using his voice and storytelling ability to contribute meaningfully to others through media campaigns, poetry, or written reflection. His work is driven by the belief that communication has the power to connect people to themselves and to one another.
