Community steps in to reinforce neighbourhood substation

The upgrades to secure the mini substation are to curb vandalism and prevent prolonged outages.

Residents have welcomed upgraded security measures at the Magnum Mini Substation (MSS) following repeated incidents of cable theft and vandalism that left parts of the area without electricity.

Resident Yvonne Ackerman said the vulnerable substation was easily accessible to criminals, but has now reportedly been reinforced to help prevent further break-ins.

Community members raised concerns over the lack of security at the MSS, saying thieves were able to open the boxes and steal cables and fittings, leaving residents without power for days at a time.

“Improved security measures come as a relief to many households affected by the outages,” said Ackerman.

Residents had previously called for stronger protection measures, including metal bars, cameras, increased patrols and improved fencing around the infrastructure.

The upgrades have been welcomed as a positive step towards protecting critical electrical infrastructure and improving the reliability of the electricity supply in the area.

While residents are pleased with the progress, many believe continued monitoring and rapid response from security companies and law enforcement agencies will still be necessary to prevent future incidents.

Community members hope the upgraded security measures will help reduce vandalism, limit power disruptions and improve safety in the area.
