Panorama Primary learners shine at Gauteng D12 chess tournament

Panorama Primary's chess stars made the right moves at district level.

Two learners from Panorama Primary School represented their school at the Gauteng D12 District Individual Chess Tournament held at Hoërskool Roodepoort on May 9.

The tournament is a district-level chess competition where learners qualify through their schools. Players are usually selected based on internal school chess trials or school rankings before advancing to district competition. Schools enter their strongest players in each age group, and the top four performers at the district level receive official recognition and awards.

Among Panorama Primary’s representatives was Ira Ramadhan, who competed and represented the school proudly. Although Ira did not secure a top-four placing, the learner displayed resilience and dedication throughout the tournament while striving for a district ranking.

According to the school’s deputy principal, Lenadi Pulella, Christelle Sockalingum delivered an outstanding performance by achieving fourth place overall in the district competition. Competing against learners from various D12 schools, Christelle’s achievement stands as a significant accomplishment for both the learner and the school.

Lenandi described the occasion as a proud moment for the school community. Having two learners participate at the district level reflects the school’s growing strength in chess development at the primary school level. Christelle’s top-four finish also highlights the value of quality coaching, learner commitment, and strong parental support.

“The school believes that extracurricular activities such as chess play an important role in learner growth and development. Chess strengthens problem-solving abilities, strategic planning, and concentration skills,” said Lenandi.

“Learners also gain valuable experience in handling pressure, developing discipline, and building resilience through competition,” she added.

Participation in district tournaments can further open doors to provincial and national opportunities, while also boosting learners’ confidence, teamwork, and school pride.

Panorama Primary continues to encourage learners to participate in activities beyond the classroom, recognising the positive impact these experiences have on personal growth and academic development.
