Local learners shine in SA U16 soccer team tour

After gaining international experience, the young goalkeeper said the trip strengthened his confidence and understanding of the game, and he is motivated to work even harder toward future national team goals.

Callum Kruger recently represented the South African U16 national team during a tour in Bulgaria, where he gained valuable experience against European opposition.

The Trinityhouse Little Falls learner featured in matches played against Georgia, Kosovo, and Bulgaria, marking an important milestone in his young soccer career.

“It was an honour and great privilege to represent my country at a U16 level,” he said.

His debut against Georgia brought a mixture of nerves and excitement as he earned his first cap for South Africa.

“Honestly, I had mixed emotions because I knew it was going to be my first cap for my country. I was a bit nervous but extremely excited,” Callum explained.

Although South Africa lost the opening match, the team responded strongly with a convincing 5–1 victory over Kosovo.

“I think our mentality shifted after our loss against Georgia. We realised how high the level of football is played abroad and we adjusted so that our game against Kosovo would be a success,” he said.

The tour ended positively with South Africa defeating Bulgaria 4–3 on penalties. Callum said the team remained calm and confident during the shootout. “During the penalty shootout, my emotions were very fixed. I went into it thinking we were going to win, and that drive and hunger helped not only me but also my team to persevere through it,” he said.

Callum also believes he performed well individually during the tournament. “I feel I had a good tournament, keeping clean sheets in my first two games that I played for my country,” he said.

One of the biggest challenges was adapting to the colder European weather conditions.

Beyond soccer, Callum said the tour taught him valuable lessons about collaboration, communication, and adjusting to other playing styles.

Looking ahead, he hopes to continue improving and help South Africa achieve success at an upcoming tournament later in the year.

“My goal going forward is to continue working hard and putting in the extra effort so that we can win the U17 COSAFA Cup at the end of the year,” he said.
