Welties lead Tennis Masters League ahead of showdown
Welties remain top of the standings, but face a tight title race with JHB and Lenasia A ahead of the final round.
Weltevreden Park Tennis Club’s men’s team is preparing for a crucial final round in the 2026 Tennis Masters 2.0 League after an unbeaten run took them to the summit of the table.
Welties have won all four of their ties since the league got underway in June, collecting 44 points to hold first place. However, the title race remains wide open, with Johannesburg (JHB) trailing by just a single point on 43 and Lenasia A right behind on 42.
The competition brings together six clubs from across Gauteng: Welties, JHB, Lenasia A, Lenasia B, Roshnee, and Azaadville. The league provides local club players with competitive match play while fostering camaraderie across the region.
Welties launched their campaign at home against Azaadville on June 14 and have preserved their unblemished record through four rounds.
Club coach Andre Arendse praised the squad’s consistency while stressing that the job is not yet finished.
“The guys have been brilliant all season, but nobody is getting ahead of themselves,” Arendse said.
“It’s so tight at the top that every single set will count. We’ll head to Benoni, play our game, and enjoy the occasion.”
The final round takes place on November 8 at Benoni Tennis Headquarters, where all six teams will gather for the season finale.
Welties are set to meet Roshnee, while title rivals JHB and Lenasia A face off in a clash bound to reshape the podium. Following the action on court, players and travelling supporters will come together for a shared post-season meal.
Beyond the Masters League, Weltevreden Park Tennis Club has recorded a busy competitive calendar this year, fielding sides in the annual men’s doubles tournament at Marks Park as well as the Gauteng Central Tennis League.
Club chairperson Yusuf Coovadia noted that the club’s success extends well beyond match statistics.
“What makes this club special is the people,” said Coovadia. “Lifting the trophy would be fantastic, but the relationships we’ve built with other clubs throughout the season are the real highlight. Anyone looking to pick up a racquet again is always welcome to drop by.”
The club encourages local supporters to make the trip to Benoni on November 8 to back the team as they look to seal the title and bring the silverware home.
